Survival: new sculptures in the making for artist Samer Roumani

Aug 2019

Sculpture Samer Roumani, who is living in Damascus, continues to work on his latest project Survival which is supported by the 5th edition of Laboratory of Arts program. Survival is an exhibition of sculptural works in an expressive style executed in different materials and sizes (wood, stone, bronze, and metal formation). The buffalo is the main element in this collection, on which the artist bestows expressive movements to indicate the conflict with reality as part of an attempt to survive and cling to life and place. This creates balance in the work and its movement in the space where it exists.

Samer’s research journey began in Damascus and included producing a photographic study of the project on paper in order to develop the general concept and the ideas behind the sculpted work. He then moved into experimenting with a group of raw materials such as Bronze, wood and metal before he committed to bronze as the sole material used in all of the exhibition’s works.

Currently, Samer is producing pieces using clay and forming the total of 20 pieces before he moves into the phase of the Bronze modling.

Samer aims to present the works in its finalized form to the public in Damascus in the last quarter of the year, as well as potentially touring the exhibition in Lebanon and China.
