Questions around Social Arts Practices in a (Dis)connected World

Between 2015 and 2024, Ettijahat – Independent Culture launched the Create Syria programme, which sought to increase the capacity of artists to contribute to the development of stronger, more cohesive communities through the design and delivery of community arts initiatives that focus on experience and artistic quality.
Within this publication, we reflect on some of the questions which accompanied the programme’s design and development, and which manifested at the intersections of art production and social change, of stable and precarious frameworks, of physical and digital presence, and of homelands and displacements. We hope that this publication inspires more questions and reflections around the role and impact of arts, and its production in uncertain and ever-changing contexts.
