Highlights from the Douroub Programme Safeguarding Training of Intangible Cultural Heritage
Independent Culture hosted a training at Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut as part of the Douroub programme, titled “Intangible Cultural Heritage: Safeguarding Training 2024.”
The training aimed to provide institutional support, expertise in program design and management, documentation and archiving skills, and to promote the basic principles of heritage conservation. These principles include ensuring active engagement with local communities, social impact, and sustainable, non-exploitative economic integration. The program also sought to enhance the intersection between contemporary arts and various forms of intangible heritage. Five organizations attended the training in Beirut, facilitated by trainers Rama Najmeh and Hiba Alkhalaf. The training program was enriched by field visits at Makani and Keendesign and with a case study represented by Souad Jarws, Director of Wellfy Handcrafts, that offered diverse perspectives and new insights into the practice of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.
