About the Reseacher: Nour Chantout and changes in Palestinian embroidery in Syria
Sep 2020
This interview was conducted with researcher Nour Chantout as part of the 7th edition of the programme Research: To Strengthen the Culture of Knowledge. Nour is currently working on a research paper entitled ‘Women Weaving Tales’, which looks at Palestinian embroidery in Damascus and the Damascus Countryside region since the beginning of the war, and the impact of demographic, social, economic and political changes on its artistic dimensions, including notes on techniques, colours, units and textiles. The research also documents these changes, analyses the methods of archiving which fail to take embroidery into account’ archiving methods, and explores the archive’s artistic side as an aesthetic act of resistance.
We also discuss the reasons which prompted the researcher to choose this specific research topic, as well as the challenges and the main issues she has been facing throughout the process. To watch the interview, please click here.
