MAHARAT: Building Careers in Performing Arts - First Edition 2020-2021

Ettijahat-Independent Culture announces the launch of an open call for its first edition of MAHARAT: Building Careers in Performing Arts, targeting the technicians working within the artistic fields willing to enhance their technical skills. The programme aims to raise the level of professionalism of technicians in the various fields of performing arts, provide them with the skills and abilities to build new careers, enhancing the capacity of those working in technical disciplines, and improve their ability to contribute to public life and to the labor market

The training programme consists of 350 hours of training, over a period of 28 weeks, being three days of training per week, with an average of 14 contact hours, distributed as follows: 8 hours of training taking place in the afternoon divided over two days per week, which will be determined later, and 6 hours of training during one day in the weekend, to be determined later.

Ettijahat prioritizes public safety throughout the training’s various activities, and will ensure the usage of the necessary means of protection to limit the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. If necessary, the training could start online with the theoretical component and continue at a later stage while taking into consideration all sorts of safety forms and social distancing throughout the training period.

Who is allowed to apply to the training programme?

  • Residents from any region in Lebanon, regardless of their nationality between the ages of 20 and 40, and who are able to attend the training programme on a regular basis.
  • Residents from the Arab region who are able to move to Lebanon, in case they have been selected, in order to join the training programme
  • Practitioners from the performing arts sector, who are looking to enhance their skills and start building a professional career
  • Practitioners and technicians who work exclusively with theatre venues or spaces and even with collective performing arts groups, and who are seeking to develop their skills
  • Technical experts who have gained practical experience and who wish to expand their knowledge through a specialised training programme
  • Those who intend to build a career in the field of performing arts, and who are able to commit to the training programme period
  • Those who have a minimum level of knowledge in the performing arts field
  • Participants who have a minimum level of English that enables them to understand the basic concepts and terminologies during the training

Criteria of selecting participants

The Selection Committee will evaluate all of the eligible applications of the MAHARAT training based on the following criteria:

  • A clear or even a potential correspondence between the applicant’s previous studies and experience with the performing arts sector
  • An even knowledge in the four categories on which the training revolves around
  • A high ability to commit to collective and participatory frames of work
  • A minimum level of knowledge that will allow participants to cope with the training requirements, in terms of being familiar with the general working mechanism of the performing arts sector, in addition to a minimum level of English

What are the required documents that I should send?

  • The completed Application Form filled in Arabic exclusively, in addition to the applicant’s most recent CV which could be in both Arabic or English 
  • A clear copy of the applicant’s ID or passport
  • Samples of artistic projects that you have previously participated in, or samples of current projects you are working on including plans and sketches for sound or light, technical riders or any similar document 
  • A video recording of no more than 100 seconds explaining your desire in applying for MAHARAT and how this training will be beneficial for you on an academic and professional level (Optional)

The main dates of MAHARAT programme

  • Deadline for applications submission: 15th of August 2020, Midnight Beirut Time
  • Selecting the first long list of participants: 27th of August 2020
  • Conducting interviews and selecting participants: From the 31st of August and until the 4th of September 2020
  • Announcing the results: Second Week of September 2020
  • Conducting the training programme (Location to be determined later): Second Half of September 2020 until the month of April 2021
